php에서 외부 프로그램 실행시킬때..

웹상에서 관리자가 호스트의 프로그램(데몬형태)를 실행/중지 시킬 수 있도록
하려고 합니다.
그래서 php의 exec함수를 써봤는데요.

$res = exec("mydm start");
echo $res;

이런 식으로 하니...프로그램이 종료되지 않아서인지 다음 문장이 수행되지가
않네요...
$res = exec("mydm stop");
echo $res;

이 경우에는 프로그램이 종료가 되어서 인지 잘 되구요.
아마도 프로그램을 실행시키고 종료가 되어야 결과값을받아오고
하는 식인 것 같은데...

이것 이외에는 방법이 없나요?

"/run/the/application > /dev/null"

정도를 쓰면 되겠군요.
