break point 의 내부 동작

디버깅을 자주 하는데요.
평소에 이런 생각을 하는데 가끔 자료를 찾아보면 없더라구요.
거의다 디버깅하는 방법 위주로 설명되어 있고 내부 동작 방식은 없더라구요.
혹시나 아시는 분 계시면 친절한 답변을 부탁드립니다.

1. break point를 걸 때 내부적으로 어떻게 동작하는지 알고 싶습니다.
2. 또한 continue를 했을 때 내부 동작 방식도 알고 싶습니다.

보통 breakpoint는 software breakpoint하고 hardware breakpoint로 나뉩니다.

software breakpoint의 경우에는 breakpoint위치에 있는 instruction을 interrupt instruction으로 바꿔치기 하고 특정 장소에 원래의 instruction을 저장합니다. 그리고 해당 instruction이 실행이 되게 되면 OS의 interrupt handler로 jump하게 되고 거기서 OS는 적절한 처리를 한 후에 debugger에 현재 상황(CPU의 register등)을 알려주고 debugger는 그것을 가지고 처리를 하게 됩니다.

hardware breakpoint의 경우에는 CPU가 해당 기능을 지원해 줘야 됩니다. CPU안에 있는 특정 register에 breakpoint로 설정하고 싶은 address를 설정하면 CPU가 해당 address의 instruction을 fetch하게 될 때 interrupt가 발생하게 되고 그 이후의 처리는 software breakpoint의 경우와 흡사합니다.

continue는 debugger로 control이 넘어왔을 때 (breakpoint위치의 interrupt instruction을 본래의 instruction으로 복구하는 등의 방법으로) breakpoint설정을 해제한 다음에 (interrupt handler return등의 방법으로) control을 본래 program에 돌려줍니다.

약간 정확하지 않은 애매한 표현이 있지만 breakpoint의 원리를 이해하는데는 문제가 없을 듯 합니다.
