i thought you just mentioned about /proc programming which could communicate with system kernel. but it is not. right ?
basically pro*c programming widely known as the best system framework approach to a the middleware system, just like banking and another finance systems. this is not the system framework for the frontend system, because of all of this frame move to php, jsp or jsp on the was.
but i have no idea right now about pro*c trend and environment current systems. i'm too far away from that system developing for a while. i better asking to another geek, not me.
therse kinds of middle ware could communicate SNA and tcp/ip or X.25 protocols bases on the rules. todays rules stored and applied XML related data format in the database or plain text xml format. what i mean the business rules always changed and some'em could applied widely common systems.
i think pro*c programming is not the new one and does not need any advanced technical skills what you have right now. if you want to do that just learn business rules and management skill, i guess.
take a look at the t-max and bea systems products, that will help.

Is it still worth spending some time to Pro*c?
that's right. tens of thousands people working on this develiping environment right now. but whatever i said, definitely its depends on you courage and decision. isn't it true?
also, what i'm saying to stiudy something, it is not just learn pro*c, learn all kinds of protocl stacks just like SNA, tcp/ip something like that.
