화일의 특정열 바꾸기

다음과 같은 데이터 화일이 있습니다.

a.txt wrote:
12345
01234
56789
...

b.txt wrote:
63765
51234
98765
...

a.txt 의 세번째 열(3,2,7,...)을 b.txt 의 두번째 열(3,1,8,...) 값으로 바꾸고자 합니다.
어떤 방법이 있을까요?

저는 cut 으로 시도했는데, 분리까지는 되나, 합치는 것에서 막힙니다.

cut -b 1-2 a.txt > 1.txt
cut -b 4-5 a.txt > 2.txt
cut -b 2 b.txt > 3.txt

1.txt 2.txt 3.txt 합치기(?)

cut -b 1-2 a.txt > 1.txt
cut -b 4-5 a.txt >> 1.txt
cut -b 2 b.txt >> 1.txt

이렇게 하면 될라나요?

paste 명령을 사용하시면 될것 같네요
