[Fedora3 Test2] udev makes system not bootable?

First of all, sorry for saying in English.

I think I got udev package onto my unofficial FC3 T2 box by updating all the packages from today's development tree. After that, it manages my system unbootable as below.

At boot message :
warning : unable to open an initial console
SElinux ...
SElinux ...
after these messages, booting process doensn't go farther.

I know some super-masters here are using FC3 rawhide version, so anyone could help me out?

I have checked /dev directory using Knoppix, and seems like many of device files are not there. And, it's Friday night now and I don't have any mean to burn new fedora cd, even don't have the rescue cd right now with me. Only thing I have is just a Knoppix cd.

ps. My wife said "why you still use that problem-thing" via phone, but I answered back to her "don't worry, honey(I wish I had to say as movie :oops: ), people will help me out to fix it."

1)Download http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core/2/i386/os/images/boot.iso to c:\download

2)Download http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core/2/i386/os/Fedora/RPMS/dev-3.3.13-1.i386.rpm to c:\download

2)Burn CD-ROM from c:\download\boot.iso
3)Reboot from this CD
4)select http installation
sever : mirrors.kernel.org
location : fedora/core/2/i386/os/
5) press ctl + alt + F2
verify shell prompt
6) mkdir /mnt/hda1, mkdir /mnt/hda2
7) mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1, mount -t ext3 /dev/hda2 /mnt/hda2
8)cd /mnt/hda1/download
9)rpm --nodeps -Uvh -r /mnt/hda2 dev-3.3.13-1.i386.rpm

이렇게 해서 문제를 해결했습니다. 방금전에 했던것을 기억나는 데로 썼는데
혹시 기억이 틀렸는지 모르지만 하여튼 저도 똑같은 문제를 이런식으로 해결했습니다. 또다른 방법이 있을듯 하지만 저의 경우 문제가 생기면 항상 이런식으로 문제를 해결하곤 해서 이번에도 문제가 생겼을 때 별로 당황하지 않고 해결했습니다. 부디 성공하시길 바랍니다.

참고로 말씀 드리면 최근 Fedora development(rawhide)부터 dev패키지가 필요 없게 되었습니다. 실제로도 dev패키지가 없어졌습니다.

해결하였습니다. 8)
위의 답변 주신 것에 착안해서, 다시 한번 패키지 확인하고, 혹시나 커널을 .521 에서 .541로 업하고 나니 해결이 되더군요.
참고로, knoppix를 사용해서 다음과 같이 했습니다.

1. boot with knoppix
2. enable to write /mnt/hda1 (boot), /mnt/hda2 (root)
3. chroot /mnt/hda2
4. wget kernel rpm
5. rpm -ivh kernel (에러 나는데 무시해도 됩니다.)
chroot 풀고,
6. cp /mnt/hda2/boot/*.* /mnt/hda1/
7. edit /mnt/hda1/grub/grub.conf (새로 인스톨한 커널을 맨위로 오게...)
8. reboot.

역시, knoppix 하나는 항상 주위에 나둬야 합니다. 답변 주신분들 고맙습니다.

저번에 이상이 있어 knoppix 로 고치려고 하다가, chroot 후에 수정하려 하면
고쳐지지 않길래 그 때 그냥 gentoo live cd 로 했었는데..

write enable 하면 되나 보군요.. ^^

예... umount /mnt/hda2, mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/hda2 -rw 이렇게 하드에 쓸 수 있게끔 다시 마운트 해주면 됩니다.

mailing list에서 오가는 이야기를 정리하면,
dev 패키지는 없어지는 것이 맞으며, udev를 사용하기 위해서는 /etc/udev/udev.conf에 UDEV_INITRD="yes"로 설정이 되어야 한답니다. (디폴트 값이니 걱정은 마시길...)
다만, .541 kernel만 현재 문제 없이 작동을 하고, 그 보다 낮은 .521이나 kernel.org에서 받아 빌드한 커스텀 커널은 문제가 있다고 합니다.

udev가 아무래도 vmware에서 잡는 네트웍이나 사운드에 대한 고려는 없었나 싶은데요. 매번 부팅할 때마다, vmware-config.pl를 다시 돌려주어야 하는 상황입니다.
