리눅스 초보 입니다. mysql설치시에 에러..

이제 갓 리눅스 입문한 초보입니다.
sql 설치로 이틀동안 연구하는데 답이 안나오네요..ㅜ.ㅡ

좀 가르쳐주세요. sql 버젼 함 높여볼래다가 설치두 안되구

[root@ratm mysql-standard-4.0.17-pc-linux-i686]# make ; make install
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. 멈춤.
make: *** 목표 `install'를 만들 규칙이 없음. 멈춤.

이게 도데체 왜이런지 모르겠습니다.
설정도 제대로 된거 같지두 않구...가르쳐주세요 고수님들.

./configure는 하셨나요?

위의 에러는 Makefile이 없을 때에 발생하는 에러인데 대부분의 오픈 소스 패키지는 우선 configure를 실행해야 Makefile이 만들어집니다.

[root@ratm mysql-standard-4.0.17-pc-linux-i686]# ./configure --prefix=/mysql --with-charset=ecu_kr
NOTE: This is a MySQL binary distribution. It's ready to run, you don't
need to configure it!

To help you a bit, I am now going to create the needed MySQL databases
and start the MySQL server for you. If you run into any trouble, please
consult the MySQL manual, that you can find in the Docs directory.

Preparing db table
Preparing host table
Preparing user table
Preparing func table
Preparing tables_priv table
Preparing columns_priv table
Installing all prepared tables

To start mysqld at boot time you have to copy support-files/mysql.server
to the right place for your system

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MySQL root USER !
This is done with:
./bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'
./bin/mysqladmin -u root -h ratm password 'new-password'
See the manual for more instructions.

You can start the MySQL daemon with:
cd . ; ./bin/mysqld_safe &

You can test the MySQL daemon with the benchmarks in the 'sql-bench' directory:
cd sql-bench ; perl run-all-tests

Please report any problems with the ./bin/mysqlbug script!

Starting the mysqld server. You can test that it is up and running
with the command:
./bin/mysqladmin version

040110 01:07:52 mysqld ended

configure 이렇게 했습니다.
그래도 안되네요.. 아 어렵습니다.
