Load Average의 정확한 의미!?!?!?

안녕하세요?
서버 장애 분석중입니다!.... 너무 어렵습니다!

특히 Load Average에 관하여 궁금합니다.
uptime 치면 나오는 load avg가 정확한 의미가 무엇일까요?
top 을 실행해도 유독히 눈에 띄는 프로세스도 없는데,
load avg.만 높습니다. 다른 서버들과 비교해도 유독 몇 몇 서버만 그러네요.

load avg.가 나타내주는 정확한 의미가 뭘까요?
보통 어떨 때 loag avg.가 높아지나요?

고수분들의 현명하고 따뜻한 답변 부탁드릴께요~~~

man top 보시면 uptime 관련 항목에 설명되어 있습니다.

This line displays the time the system has been up, and the three
load averages for the system. The load averages are the average
number of process ready to run during the last 1, 5 and 15 min-
utes. This line is just like the output of uptime(1). The uptime
display may be toggled by the interactive l command.

즉..1분,5분,15분 동안에 동작중인 Process 갯수의 평균 입니다.
RUN 상태인 process가 많으면 이 수치가 높아지겠지요..
