액티브X 외에 쓸 수 있는???

고민을 여러번 해봤는데 아는게 부족해서 답이 나오지 않아 질문 드립니다.

데이터베이스에 있는 xml 데이터나, txt 소스를 서버이든 클라이언트이든 어느 한쪽이 변환해서 웹페이지에 이미지 혹은 비슷한걸로 출력 하고 싶은데... 해보지 않았지만, 액티브x를 이용해서 사용자의 컴퓨터에 있는 어플리케이션을 이용해 데이터를 변환해 브라우저에 보이게 하는 방법은 가능할 것 같아 보입니다.

비슷한 방법으로 자바 애플릿으로 가능한지도 궁금하고, PHP나 다른 언어로도 가능한게 있으면 알고 싶네요.
