루트 밑에있는 etc, var, opt 가 어떤 단어들의 약자인지 궁금합

루트 디렉토리에 보면
/etc
/var
/opt
라는 디렉토리가 있습니다.

/etc 가 "기타등등" 이런뜻의 etc 가 아닐텐데요.
보통 그냥 아무생각없이 리눅스를 사용했었는데 갑자기 궁금해졌습니다.

위 세가지 디렉토리명이 무엇의 약자이고 어떤 성격의 디렉토리인지 궁금합니다.
