데스크탑에서 debian 4.0 'etch'에서 usb 하드가 마운트가 되지 않습니다.

데스크탑에서 데비안 4.0을 사용합니다.
그리고 옥션에서 중고로 구입한 usb 30G 노트북하드를 하이레벨 포멧을 할려고 합니다.
그리고 위 중고하드의 파일시스템이 ntfs 인지 vfat인지는 잘 모르겠습니다.

그리고 부팅할 때 아래와 같이 이상한 에러 메새지가 나옵니다.
커널 컴파일을 해야 USB 하드를 사용할 수 있나요?
그렇다면 커널 컴파일 참고 사이트 좀 알려 주세요.

그리고 15G-FAT32 노트북 하드에 윈도ME가 깔려 있는데 이 하드도 인식을 못하고 부팅시에 에러가 나며 10G-FAT32 데스크탑 하드도 부팅시에 에러가 납니다.

이유가 뭘까요?
