_XOPEN_SOURCE 에 대해...

제가 보고 있는 책에 FIFO 를 이용해서 CD 데이터 베이스 프로그램을 만드는
부분이 있습니다. Beginning Linux Prog. 1판인데요..대림에서 번역된거

록스에서 2판(3판인가?) 소스를 다운받고 컴파일을 해보니 cd_dbm.c파일에서 다음과 같은 에러가 나더군요.

소스안에 #define _XOPEN_SOURCE 를 제거하고 컴파일 하니까 제대로
되었습니다.

근데 7장의 소스는 똑같이 dbm을 사용하는 소스인데 _XOPEN_SOURCE가
포함되도 잘 컴파일이 됩니다.

게시판에 검색해봤는데 _ XOPEN_SOURCE에 대한 글이 몇개 있더군요.
각종 유닉스 패밀리에 대해서 비슷한 정의가 많은거 같은데....
이 정의가 있을때 왜 컴파일이 되지 않는건지 궁금합니다.
/usr/include 아래에 의심가는 헤더를 열어서 _XOPEN_SOURCE를 찾아봐도
잘 못찾겠더군요.
컴파일 환경은 Gentoo 2004.0, gcc 3.3.2입니다.
