바닐라(upstream)커널과 리눅스배포판 커널의 차이

슬랙웨어를 제외한 대부분의 리눅스배포판이 kernel.org의 바닐라커널을 커스터마이징하여 자신들의 배포판에 적용시킵니다.
이때 바닐라커널을 커스터마이징을 할때, 뭔가(소스코드,기능)를 더하기만 하나요? 아님 더하기도하고 빼기도 하나요?

그리고
배포판에 포함된 커널대신 바닐라커널을 가져와 oldconfig해서 사용하면, 잘 작동이 됩니까?
혹은 역으로 슬랙웨어같은 배포판에 우분투커널을 가져와 oldconfig해서 사용하면, 잘 작동이 됩니까?
