전역변수 선언에 관한 질문입니다.

A,B,C,D 의 네개의 데몬 프로그램이 있습니다.
이 네개의 프로그램은 클라이언트와 통신하며 작업을 하는데요...

이 네개의 프로그램에서 공통적으로 사용해야 하는 변수가 있어..
마침 공통적으로 사용하는 헤더 파일이 있기에 헤더 파일에

extern int gi_test;

라고 선언하였습니다.

그런데 프로그램 내부에서 저 변수에 관련된 부분을 한번 실행하고 나면 다시 원래 값(0) 으로 초기화가 됩니다.
(설명하기가 좀 어려운데... 소스상에 0 으로 초기화 해주는 부분은 초기 선언시 외에는 없고...
프로그램 실행하면서 어느시점에선가 초기화가 되는것 같습니다. --;)

헤더파일에 추가하면 include한 프로그램이 실행되거나 프로그램 내부의 함수가 실행될때마다 초기화가 되는것인가요?
네개의 프로그램에서 공통적으로 사용하는 전역변수는 어떤 식으로 선언해서 사용하면 되는것인가요?

인터넷 뒤져봐도 전역변수에 대한 설명은 헤더파일에 추가 저런식으로 하는것 같던데...
