Madwifi-0.9.2 rate 설정

현제 레드헷 커널 2.4.33 버전으로 커널 컴파일 하여 Madwifi Driver를 사용 하고 있습니다.
그런데 rate 설정시(iwconfig ath0 rate 54M) 6M, 12M, 54M 등은 아무런 이상 없이 적용이 되고,
4M 로 설정 하면 "Error for wireless request "Set Bit Rate" (8B20) : SET failed on device ath0 ; Invalid argument." 라는 에러 메시지가 뜹니다.
하지만 1M, 2M 등으로 설정 하면 Kernel Panic 으로 시스템이 다운 되어 버립니다.
원인이 무엇인지 아시는 분 계시나요?
원래는 설정 되어야 하는 것인데 Madwifi Driver 버그 라고 해도 커널 패닉이 뜨는 것은 왜 일까요?
