GUADEC 2006 Summary

  • GUADEC 2006 - Gnome Users and Developers European Conference
  • Location: Vilanova i la Geltr? (Catalonia - Spain)
  • Dates: June 24 - June 26, 2006

It's a little over 2 months since I've been to GUADEC 2006 so my memory is spotty. I apologize for the brief account, but I hope you guys enjoy it.

On June 24th-30th, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend GUADEC 2006 at Vilanova i la Geltr? (Catalonia - Spain). GUADEC stands for "GNOME Users and Developers European Conference." The annual conference is known as "THE GNOME Conference" as it brings together GNOME developers from all over the world. Over 400 people attended the conference during the week long meeting.

Back in January, Quim (pronounced "Kim"), the lead organizer, sponsored a logo and Drupal theme competition for the GUADEC website. The prize was a sponsored trip to GUADEC including airfare, lodging, and meals to the winner of the competition. Originally, the competition was combined and the single winner was supposed to earn two tickets, but towards the end of the competition, it was split to sponsor two winners. Behnam did a wonderful job on the logo and won the logo competition and I won the theme competition by default b/c I was the only person who submitted a theme. :-) My involvement did not stop with a simple theme design, I ended up setting up GUADEC website (http://www.guadec.org) and organizing the website. I spent the next few months helping with the design and content of the site as much as I could. The final theme looks nothing like the initial look I submitted, but in the end we ended up with a functional site. In the process, I also received CVS access to the GNOME CVS repository and I became the official maintainer of GUADEC.org.

I arrived in Vilanova around 3pm on Friday. The weather was dry and very, very hot. The temperature were over 40 celsius. I was planning to arrive a little bit early to help setup and do whatever I could, but it turned out that they really didn't need my help. So I just traveled and checked in to the "GNOME Village", a local camping site.

IMG_5048.JPG

Most of the conference attendees ended up staying at the "GNOME Village." It turned out to be very nice, because we were able to interact and get to know other GUADEC attendees. Most of the lodges were small, no air conditioning, or hot water, but I was lucky and I ended up staying in a nice bungalow, with air conditioning, a small kitchen, comfortable beds and a large deck. Our bungalow became a "hotspot", not only b/c we had a comfortable place but b/c we managed to setup an ad-hoc wireless network by sharing a single internet connection through one of our laptops.

At first I was dreading the idea of going alone to Europe. It was my first time going to a place that didn't speak English or Korean and I wasn't really sure what to expect. Thankfully, my doubts were forgotten as soon as I began to meet other attendees. This was my first open-source conference and it was amazing to meet so many people who were so passionate about technology. It really helped that my roommates were very nice and fun people.

I met Lennart Poettering (on the right) while waiting to check-in to my bungalow. He lives in Hamburg, Germany finishing up this graduate degree. He was sponsored to GUADEC like I was because of his work on Avahi, a zeroconf, multicast dns system much like Apple's Bonjour... only better :-) He also developed a sound server called Pulse Audio which will probably replace esd. He gave an impromptu presentation on the last day of the conference about Pulse Audio and all the guys from RedHat, Ubuntu and Novell desktop team were very interested. John McKay (Middle) is a system administrator at John Hopkins University's NASA team working on the Hubble Telescope, which uses Gnome as their desktop environment. He is also the lead developer and maintainer of the Gnome Screensaver. Sigurd (left) is from Finland and leads the translation team. He works for Yahoo's search team and was very interested in Korean because he said it was very difficult to debut Korean. ;-p Our last roommate, John was from England.

I was the only Korean attending GUADEC but there were some Asians in the crowd. Patrick and Ginn were from Beijing, China working for Sun. I also met Dulmandakh who was from Mongolia. Dulmandakh had attended the Asian F/OSS Conference in Malaysia and to me that he met Shawn Kwon. He asked me if I knew Shawn and I told him that I knew Shawn through KLDP. Dulmandakh said that Shawn was such an inspiration b/c he was running KLDP for the past 10 years and he was already discouraged by the lack of support and enthusiasm in Mongolia after only working on F/OSS for a couple years. Dulmandakh wore a traditional Mongolia costume to represent his country and everybody wanted to take pictures with him, including me :)

GUADEC was split into 3 conferences:

  • Warm up weekend
  • GUADEC Core
  • After Hours Workshops

GUADEC Core was ran 3 tracks:

  • Catwalk - User
  • Tangle - Business
  • Topaz - Developer/Future

Starting at 10am, there were presentations throughout the day until 8:00pm. We were forced to start late and end late, because of Siesta (Spanish tradition to take naps after lunch) all the shops and restaurants were closed until 8:00pm. This worked out wonderfully for us, b/c most of use were more active at night. During the day we attended various presentations and hung around the main lobby area, which had tables, outlets, and most importantly, wifi. After each conference day, a group of us would walk to the main touristy beach lined with restaurants and have amazing Tapazs and cheap Spanish beer while enjoying each other's company.

IMG_5094.JPG

A few nights, Google, Nokia and Fluendo sponsored after parties and all the GUADEC attendees were able to hang around each other. The presentations were fun and informative, but I can hardly remember them anymore. The most amazing and fun part of GUADEC was definitely the people. Every night was a party and so much fun hanging out with people. (Maybe too much fun... I gained over 10 lbs during my trip to Europe)

IMG_5066.JPG

The day before the conference ended, I helped lead a discussion on the future of gnome.org. I was extermely nervous b/c I didn't know what to expect and the people attendeding were so sharp and smart. I ended up taking sticky notes that we used for the GNOME Love board and handed out a sticky note to everybody. I then asked everyone to write a topic that they wanted to talk about. We then posted the notes on the wall and organized them into different categories. This help faciliate and organize the discussion. I was extremely fruitful and people gave me positive feedback on the meeting. The discussion is continuing in the Gnome marketing mailing list.

IMG_5084.JPG

I've been a long-time user of GNOME, but meeting the developers and other users at GUADEC has made the GNOME community so much more personal for me. I makes me want to evangelize and spread the desktop more and I want to contribute directly to the project with code and other resources. I am definitely look forward to next year's conference and I would encourage everybody to attend. You'll enjoy it! :)

Vilanova i la Geltr? (Catalonia - Spain)
